The Norwegian Matchbox

Let’s talk about the Norwegian matchbox or about its production …
It started in Christiania (Oslo) 1838. In 1875, we had 18 factories in the country. The design of the “modern” matchbox was executed by the advertising artist Sverre Eikrem (1914 – 1996) after a competition in 1941. He was fascinated by the pine tree which became the symbol (logo) of the matchbox. The winning design was named “SolstrÃ¥le” which translates as the ray of the sun.
There has been many discussions about where and which pine tree was used in the design.
